Pain or burning when you urinate can be uncomfortable and concerning. Painful urination can occur in both women and men. If you are traveling in Japan or living here, you may wonder what could be causing your symptoms and whether you should see a doctor.
Our clinic provides medical consultations in both English and Japanese. International visitors traveling in Japan, as well as foreign residents living in Japan, are welcome to consult with us about urinary symptoms.
What Can Cause Painful Urination?
Painful urination can have several possible causes. Common causes include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Urethritis
- Prostatitis
- Urinary stones
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common cause of painful urination in both women and men. Urethritis and prostatitis can also cause these symptoms. Urethritis may be caused by sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
What Other Symptoms May Occur?
Depending on the cause, you may also experience:
- Frequent urination
- An urgent need to urinate
- Discharge from the penis
- Blood in the urine
- Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
- Testicular pain
- Fever or chills
Not everyone with a urinary infection or STI has obvious symptoms. If you have persistent or worsening symptoms, you should consider seeking medical advice.
What Happens at the Clinic?
A urologist can examine you, assess your symptoms and medical history, and determine what tests may be appropriate.
Depending on your symptoms and medical history, testing may include a urine test, blood test, ultrasound examination, or STI testing.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For example, bacterial infections may require antibiotics, while other conditions may require different treatment.
If you are visiting Japan and develop painful urination during your trip, you do not need to wait until you return home to seek medical care. If you live in Japan, you can also consult a urologist if your symptoms continue or recur.
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should seek medical attention if:
- Painful urination continues or becomes worse
- You have discharge from the penis
- You have blood in your urine
- You develop fever or chills
- You have significant abdominal, pelvic, or testicular pain
- You are concerned about a possible STI
Prompt evaluation can help identify the cause and determine the appropriate treatment.
Whether you are visiting Japan or living here, if you are experiencing painful urination or other urinary symptoms, you are welcome to consult our clinic.
