STI
If you are concerned about a sexually transmitted infection (STI/STD), such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, we provide confidential evaluation, testing, and treatment for men in Asakusa, Tokyo.
If you have burning or pain when urinating, discharge from the penis, or other genital symptoms after sexual contact, an STI may be one possible cause.
Our board-certified urologists can evaluate your symptoms and help determine whether you have an STI, a urinary tract infection (UTI), or another urological condition.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also commonly called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, oral, or anal sex.
Common STIs include:
Some STIs are curable with appropriate treatment, while others can be managed but are not currently curable.
Importantly, many STIs cause no symptoms, so a person can have an infection without knowing it. Testing may therefore be appropriate even when you feel well, depending on your sexual history and potential exposure.
STIs can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
However, having no symptoms does not rule out an STI.
Burning or painful urination does not always mean that you have a urinary tract infection.
In men, urinary symptoms can be caused by:
For example, chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause urethritis, which may produce symptoms similar to a UTI.
At our clinic, a urine sediment examination (urine microscopy) can be performed during your visit. This examination helps us assess whether there are findings in the urine that may suggest a urinary tract infection.

Example of urine sediment microscopy findings.
The results can be checked promptly during your visit and explained to you by the doctor. We can also display the findings on a monitor so that you can see and understand the results together with the doctor.
However, urine microscopy alone cannot determine whether urinary symptoms are caused by a UTI or an STI. If an STI is suspected based on your symptoms, sexual history, or examination findings, additional STI testing may be recommended.
Our urologists will evaluate your symptoms, urine test results, and other clinical findings to determine the most likely cause and recommend appropriate testing and treatment.
The appropriate tests depend on your symptoms, sexual exposure, and the type of STI being considered.
Depending on the situation, testing may include urine or other appropriate samples and blood tests.
For men with suspected urethritis, urine testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea may be recommended. Identifying the specific cause of an infection can help guide appropriate treatment and reduce the risk of ongoing transmission or reinfection.
If you have recently had sexual contact that you are concerned about, please let us know when you visit. You can discuss your concerns with the doctor confidentially.
If you know or suspect that a sexual partner has been diagnosed with an STI, please tell your doctor, even if you do not have symptoms.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea are common bacterial STIs that can cause urethritis in men.
Possible symptoms include:
However, both infections can also be asymptomatic.
Testing is important because symptoms alone cannot reliably determine which infection is present.
Appropriate antibiotic treatment is available for these infections. Because antibiotic resistance, particularly in gonorrhea, is an important concern, treatment should be selected according to the suspected or confirmed infection.
Mycoplasma genitalium is another sexually transmitted bacterium that can cause urethritis in men.
It may cause symptoms similar to chlamydia, including burning urination and urethral discharge.
Testing may be considered in certain situations, particularly when symptoms persist or recur after initial treatment.
Syphilis can cause a variety of symptoms and may be difficult to recognize based on symptoms alone. Blood testing is commonly used for diagnosis.
If you are unsure which tests you need, you do not have to decide in advance. Our doctor can discuss your concerns and recommend appropriate testing.
Our STI services focus on the evaluation, testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections commonly encountered in urological practice, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, Mycoplasma genitalium, and syphilis.
Blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV) are also available at our clinic. However, we do not provide further evaluation or treatment for these infections. If further evaluation or treatment is needed based on your results, we will recommend an appropriate specialist or medical institution.
If you are visiting Japan and will leave Tokyo or return to your home country within a few days, it may not always be possible to wait for test results or return for a follow-up visit.
Whenever possible, identifying the cause of an infection with appropriate testing is ideal. However, if follow-up testing or a return visit is not practical, your doctor may recommend treatment based on your symptoms, sexual history, physical examination, and the infections that are considered most likely.
If your symptoms improve, no further visit may be necessary in some cases. However, if your symptoms persist, worsen, or return after treatment, please seek medical attention at a local clinic or hospital where you are staying, or in your home country.
If you are still in Tokyo and need further evaluation, you are welcome to revisit our clinic.
Treatment depends on the type of infection and the results of your evaluation.
Bacterial STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea require appropriate antibiotic treatment. Other infections, such as genital herpes, require different approaches to treatment.
Whenever possible, treatment is selected based on the suspected or confirmed cause of the infection.
If you are diagnosed with an STI, it is also important to follow your doctor’s advice regarding sexual activity and partner testing or treatment. Appropriate management of sexual partners can help prevent reinfection and further transmission.
If you are diagnosed with an STI, follow your doctor’s instructions regarding sexual activity and partner testing or treatment.
Some infections can recur or be transmitted again if sexual partners are not appropriately evaluated and treated.
If symptoms persist or return after treatment, further evaluation may be necessary.
If you are still in Tokyo, you are welcome to revisit our clinic. If you have traveled to another city or returned to your home country, please consult a local healthcare provider.
Consider seeing a doctor if you:
Because many STIs can be asymptomatic, you do not necessarily need to wait until symptoms appear before seeking testing.
You do not need to know which STI test you need before your visit. Our doctor can discuss your symptoms and concerns with you and help determine the appropriate evaluation.
We understand that discussing sexual health can feel uncomfortable, especially when you are in a foreign country.
Our goal is to provide a private, respectful, and non-judgmental environment where you can discuss your concerns openly.
If you are worried about an STI, you do not need to feel embarrassed. Early testing and appropriate treatment can help protect your health and reduce the risk of transmission to others.
